The same can be said for some of the mini-games, such as the ones where you try to send your driver crashing out the windscreen for as far as possible.īut while we’re sure a lack of time and budget is at the root of its problems, FlatOut 4 is so technically flawed, with its low tech graphics and uneven frame rate, that it’s impossible to recommend. It’s still half-broken and extremely limited but even if you’re laughing at it, instead of with it, you are at least being entertained. There are also a couple of modes inspired by the old Destruction Derby games on the original PlayStation, and this is where FlatOut 4 comes closest to redeeming itself. At least it’s better than Assault mode though, which tragically tries to be Mario Kart with more explosive weapons – but is so impossibly random it’s virtually unplayable. The career mode is predictably uninteresting, given the artificial intelligence, but unfortunately that’s what you have to play to access all the locked content. Most objects, including cars, feel like they’re filled with nothing but hot air, as they tumble about on the ground like lost balloons or suddenly launch into the air as if the laws of gravity have forgotten all about them.įlatOut 4 (PS4) – at least it’s not as bad as the last oneįlatOut 4 boasts of 10 different game modes, and to its credit they’re all quite different. Naturally, rival cars are equally susceptible to damage, although they at least have a health bar for you to deplete before they explode into flames. ![]() This is also present and correct in FlatOut 4, with everything from walls and fences to suspiciously placed explosive barrels becoming nothing but fodder for your car’s front grill. What made FlatOut different from other games is that you were able to destroy almost everything on the track, with a level of destructible scenery that would shame even Battlefield. That at least is something this sequel manages to replicate without issue. Despite how fun the original games were the actual handling model was never particularly good, and always felt a bit loose and woolly.
